Breast Services

Breast Services Overview. The Lacks Cancer Center Breast Services suite is a vital source of community education, diagnostic technologies and supportive services. Housing four mammography units, on-site radiologists, computer assisted diagnosis and stereotactic biopsies in one convenient location, this remarkable centralized suite offers:
  • Breast Ultrasound. The breast ultrasound is used to evaluate breast abnormalities found on a mammogram or felt by the patient or the patient’s physician during a breast exam. The ultrasound is not used as a screening tool for breast cancer, but can determine if what is seen or felt is a solid mass or a fluid filled cyst.
  • Stereotactic Biopsy. A stereotactic biopsy is a test that uses a special computer to guide a needle to an abnormality seen on a mammogram. This biopsy is a minimally invasive, highly accurate way to obtain the tissue sample required for diagnosis. The procedure requires little recovery time and there is no significant scarring to the breast.
  • Breast Support Group. Women who have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, who are undergoing treatment or who are supporting a loved one facing the disease are invited to participate in our monthly Breast Services support group, Woman to Woman.
  • Community Education Programs. Our oncology nurses are available to present educational programs on breast health, with an emphasis on early detection. Community organizations that wish to take part in these programs should call Breast Services at (616) 752-6756 or 1-800-639-6266.
