New Gastrointestinal Cancer Clinic Sees First Patients

01/26/2010

The Gastrointestinal Clinic at The Lacks Cancer Center saw its first patients on January 8th. The clinic is specifically designed to speed treatment decisions and reduce the amount of time patients spend waiting for answers. A team of the area’s best specialists assembles in one location on the same day, for evaluation and to determine a treatment plan. This collaborative model of care keeps patients, families, referring physicians and cancer specialists fully informed and active in the decision-making process. Patients go from a suspicious finding to a treatment plan in the shortest possible time.

Upon referral, a patient usually enters the GI Clinic for initial consultation and, if necessary, testing and/or biopsies are performed. After pathology is complete, and if a cancer is present, the patient is scheduled for the next multidisciplinary clinic meeting with team members, lead by Dr Larry McCahill, our Medical Director of Surgical Oncology, to discuss treatment options and recommendations.

When a gastrointestinal cancer is detected, the faster treatment begins the better. Our GI Clinic can get you there in days not weeks.

To become part of the Multidisciplinary GI Clinic have your primary care physician make a referral, or self-refer by calling 1-877-LACKS-MI or 616-685-LACK(S).
