Sarcoma Treatment OptionsSoft Tissue Sarcoma Treatment. A core biopsy is the most effective way to diagnose soft cell sarcoma. Once a conclusive diagnosis has been made, the staging of patients with soft tissue sarcoma is vitally important in the proper planning of surgery and additional therapies. This is most often done using a combination of a CAT scan or MRI. Primary treatment of these diseases involve surgical removal of the cancerous cells along with the associated bowel or intraabdominal organs and, in some cases, additional radiation therapy, or occasionally chemotherapy. Maintaining limbs and limb function is of utmost importance when planning these therapies, and should involve a team of surgeons—comprised of a surgical oncologist, orthopedic surgeon and possibly a plastic surgeon—such as the multidisciplinary team found at The Lacks Cancer Center.Retroperitoneal Sarcoma Treatment. The primary treatment for this disease typically requires an en bloc surgical removal of not only the tumor, but a portion of the colon, kidney and adrenal gland. As with other complex surgeries, en bloc is best performed by a team with expertise in progressive procedures, such as our team led by Dr. Timothy Fitzgerald. Radiation therapy and Chemotherapy may also be incorporated into the treatment of certain high-risk patients. Seek the most aggressive treatments available from our multidisciplinary team with a referral from your primary care physician or with a self-referral by calling 1-877-LACKS-MI or 616-752-LACK(S). |
