Program Overview. At The Lacks Cancer Center our cancer treatment programs increase hope everyday, thanks to a multidisciplinary model of care, which incorporates a staff of progressive physicians, innovative technologies and aggressive treatments. In addition to this model, we continually review and apply the latest anti-cancer drugs, the newest staging and imaging techniques, and the most effective surgical procedures to ensure the best outcomes in the treatment of prostate cancer.
Prostate Cancer Overview. One of the most common cancers among men, prostate cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells develop in the tissues of the prostate gland—located just below the bladder and surrounding part of the urethra (the tube that empties urine from the bladder). This cancer type is highly treatable if detected in its early stages.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a non-cancerous enlargment of the prostate. This common occurrence among older men may cause blockage of the bladder outlet and, in turn, result in difficulty with urination and/or sexual function. Although it is not cancer, BPH may require treatment to restore normal function.
Signs and Symptoms. Prostate cancer may go undetected, as it often shows no symptoms. However, there may be telltale signs. If you encounter any of the following issues a doctor should be consulted immediately:
- Weak or interrupted flow of urine
- Frequent urination (especially at night) or difficulty urinating
- Pain or burning sensations during urination
- Blood in the urine or semen
- Consistent back, hip or pelvic pain
- Painful ejaculation
