Treatment Options

Surgical Treatment. The Lacks Cancer Center provides the focused multidisciplinary approach of an expert team of surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists and dedicated care specialists, which, in turn, produces successful surgical outcomes for our patients. When tumors are confined to the stomach or adjacent lymph nodes, treatment typically begins with a surgical procedure called a gastrectomy. Because there is clear evidence through medical research that patients benefit from post-operative chemotherapy and radiation, those with high-risk gastric cancers should continue their treatment with a combination of these therapies.

Treatment for Inoperative Cancer. When cancer has spread (metastasized) beyond the stomach, treatment is individualized and based on both patient symptoms and tumor characteristics. There are many treatment options that can slow cancer growth and relieve symptoms. For instance, patients with advanced gastric cancer can be treated with chemotherapy, or a combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Also, for patients who have difficulty controlling symptoms related to blockage of the stomach, gastrectomy or endoscopically placed metallic stents can bring relief.
