Cervical CancerProgram Overview. At The Lacks Cancer Center our cancer treatment programs are increasing hope everyday, thanks to a multidisciplinary model of care, which incorporates a staff of progressive physicians, and innovative technology. In addition to this model, we continually review and apply the latest anti-cancer drugs, the newest staging and imaging techniques, and the most effective surgical procedures to ensure the best outcomes in the treatment of cervical cancer.Cervical Cancer Overview. Before cancer appears in the cervix (opening of the uterus from the vagina), its cells go through changes known as dysplasia, a process in which abnormal, precancerous cells begin to appear in the cervical tissue. Cancerous cells develop from the dysplasic cells and eventually spread more deeply into the cervix and surrounding areas. Dysplasic cells are primarily caused by the sexually transmitted, human papilloma virus (HPV). Risk factors for HPV, and therefore for cervical cancer, include having sex with a partner who has had numerous sexual partners and premature sexual intercourse. Other risk factors include a weakened immune system (HIV or AIDS) and/or smoking cigarettes. Signs and Symptoms. Possible signs of cervical cancer include vaginal bleeding—including bleeding between periods and bleeding after intercourse—unusual vaginal discharge and pelvic pain or pain during sexual intercourse. There are typically no noticeable signs or symptoms of cervical displasia, but it can be detected with annual Pap smears. Find out more about our Multidisciplinary Model of Care through a referral from your primary care physician or with a self-referral by calling 1-877-LACKS-MI or 616-752-LACK(S). |
