Tumors of The Bile Duct

Program Overview. At The Lacks Cancer Center, our bile duct cancer treatment programs are increasing hope everyday, thanks to a unique multidisciplinary model of care, which incorporates a staff of progressive physicians, and the most innovative technologies available. In addition to this model, we continually review and apply the latest anti-cancer drugs, the newest staging and imaging techniques, and the most effective surgical procedures to ensure the best outcomes in the treatment of bile duct cancer.

Bile Duct Tumor Overview. Cholangiocarcinoma is a rare tumor of the bile duct. Symptoms include clay colored stool, abdominal pain, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin). Diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma is most often made with ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography), a technique that uses a long, lighted instrument to inject dye into the bile duct. The dye highlights the duct, allowing a more detailed image for inspection. The only curative treatment of this cancer is complete surgical removal of all cancerous tissue, including microscopic tissue. This surgical procedure is complex and best performed by surgeons with expertise in liver and biliary surgery, such as those at The Lacks Cancer Center.
